The offspring of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked allegations at the commencement of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.

The defendant, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she made on online platforms in the past during fatal protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her parent.

A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, left at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this violence and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terror acts and public disorder.

History of the Case

The protests were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KZN and were triggered by the previous president's detention for defying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an investigation into claims of graft while he was holding office.

The defendant has always rejected the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the state's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also repeatedly claimed the accusations against her were an bid to resolve political disputes with her dad after he founded his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the former president and his relatives.

A small number of backers from her group, her party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her dad and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has maintained that the proof presented by the state is unconvincing and does not have compelling grounds for a conviction.
