Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their release of a controversial video.

The Recording That Sparked the Debate

The video footage, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in military or defense positions.

"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the statutes or our founding principles."

Trump's Furious Response

The clip reportedly trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader published a joint statement censuring the statements.

"Violent politics has no position in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our United States with great national pride and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the protection of these members and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged online messages and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration stated.

Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction

The representatives who appeared in the video also released a response.

"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who love this country and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the former president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "The entire nation must join forces and condemn the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."

Further Partisan Reactions

The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the death of government members."

He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of Congress instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also reportedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and decide all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a video message to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."

She stated: "The purity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
