Heavy Rains Exacerbate Conditions for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, Agencies Warn
Persistent rains over the last seven days have intensified the extremely difficult circumstances of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the territory, as stated by humanitarian groups.
"Terrible" Night Brings Severe Risks
A spokesman characterized the recent storm as "awful", with precipitation so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the streets.
"Last night was truly horrendous for the residents. The downpours were so intense... And the gusts were so powerful," said the official.
There is significant worry that minors living in temporary structures in damp clothing will contract hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Casualties and Significant Damage
Health authorities have stated that one baby has passed away from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have died in building collapses caused by the storms.
Other reports indicate a higher number of casualties. Authorities stated that numerous structures had totally fallen and scores had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families impacted by rains.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces submerged.
- Countless residents required to relocate again.
Relief Distribution Considered Inadequate
Agencies have increased deliveries of tarpaulins, blankets and clothes following the ceasefire started, but they have said there is still not enough aid getting in.
"Agencies are operating tirelessly to provide that aid and to distribute it, but the magnitude of the requirements is so vast that we are faced with a great number of families and children who are really suffering every night," warned one representative.
Long-Term Concerns and Truce Plans
The subsequent part of the agreement involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the withdrawal of military forces, and other conditions.
Aid groups have underscored the necessity for "expanded and ongoing aid to respond to pressing and future needs."
The war was initiated by an offensive in late 2023. Following actions have led to a substantial number of lives lost in the area, as per official reports.
