New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
