Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Rebuke
Figures from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment world are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to defend the comments.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
