The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
