The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
