What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

Editor's Note: The following contains major spoilers for the concluding episodes.

A Journey Into the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel is detailed in the stage play The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
